Upper School to Present Its Most Ambitious Production Yet: Disney’s "Frozen: The Musical"

April 10-12, Norfolk Collegiate's upper school will bring the magic of Arendelle to life with its production of Disney’s "Frozen: The Musical"—the largest and most complex theatrical performance in the school’s history. Blending Broadway-level spectacle with deep student involvement, the show promises to be a standout moment for the school’s performing arts program.

A Student-Driven Production

While audiences can expect the magic and excitement of the beloved musical, what makes this production especially unique is the level of student leadership behind the scenes.

"The cast features 35 student performers, supported by a student running crew of approximately 10," said Brendan Hoyle, director of arts and innovation and the show's director. "Beyond the stage, students in the Theatrical Production class have designed and built much of the show’s scenery, while those in the Costume and Fashion Design class have helped create many of the costumes seen throughout the performance."

Rehearsals began in early January, with students dedicating months of hard work to transform the stage into the world of Arendelle. The result is a production that highlights not only performance talent, but also creativity and craftsmanship.

A Seasoned Creative Team

The production is led by a trusted and experienced team that has developed a strong collaborative rhythm over several years. Director Brendan Hoyle is joined by Music Director and Conductor Madeline Gondek and Choreographer Kathryn Finney. "Frozen" marks the fifth production this trio has brought to life at Norfolk Collegiate.

A Professional Musical Experience

Adding to the production’s richness is a live orchestra composed of professional musicians from Tidewater Winds.

"This long-standing partnership offers students the rare opportunity to perform alongside professional performers, elevating the musical experience to an exceptional level," said Hoyle.

A “Supercharged” Story

The stage adaptation of "Frozen" expands on the beloved animated film with additional songs, dynamic choreography and theatrical effects. Hoyle describes it as a “supercharged” version of the story audiences know and love—filled with humor, spectacle and heartfelt moments that resonate with all ages.

A Meaningful Final Bow for Seniors

For senior members of the cast and crew, this production holds special significance. It marks their final musical after years of dedication both on stage and behind the scenes, making this performance as meaningful as it is memorable.
