About The Installation Ceremony
An installation ceremony is one of the oldest traditions in independent schools and colleges. More than a celebration, it is the formal investiture of a school's leader, marking the beginning of their stewardship of the institution. During the ceremony, school leaders, trustees, faculty, students, alumni and community members gather to recognize the responsibilities of the office and reaffirm the school's mission and values.
The ceremony, held in the upper school gym from 10–10:45 a.m., will include a processional, invocation, the National Anthem, welcome remarks and reflections from school leaders, student government and the Board of Trustees. The formal installation of Jonathan Day, Sr. as head of school will be followed by his installation address, sharing his vision for Norfolk Collegiate's future. The ceremony will conclude with the singing of the school's Alma Mater and an invitation for guests to continue the celebration at a reception in the Meredith Center for the Arts immediately following the ceremony.
Norfolk Collegiate's installation of Jonathan Day, Sr. is especially meaningful as it marks the school's first head of school installation in 30 years. Together, our community will celebrate this historic milestone and the beginning of an exciting new chapter for the Mighty Oaks.

Meet Jonathan Day, Sr.
Jonathan Day, Sr. brings more than two decades of experience in independent school education, a deep commitment to student growth and a passion for building strong school communities to his role as Norfolk Collegiate’s Head of School.Prior to joining Norfolk Collegiate, Jonathan served as Head of Upper School at Savannah Country Day School in Savannah, Georgia, where he led the upper school program and worked closely with students, families, faculty and staff to foster a culture of academic excellence, belonging and personal growth. Before his time at Savannah Country Day, Jonathan spent more than a decade at Pace Academy in Atlanta, serving in several roles, including Science Department Chair, Dean of Students and science teacher.
A lifelong educator, Jonathan believes that the strongest schools are built on meaningful relationships and a shared commitment to helping students discover their unique strengths and potential. Throughout his career, he has been recognized as a thoughtful, approachable leader who prioritizes student experience, supports faculty growth and works collaboratively with families and colleagues.
Jonathan’s connection to education and the Southeast runs deep. He is a graduate of Woodward Academy in Atlanta and earned a Bachelor of Science in Forest Resources with a concentration in Wildlife Science from the University of Georgia. He later earned a Master of Science in Natural Resources Management with a focus on Wildlife Biology from Louisiana State University.
Jonathan and his family are excited to become part of the Norfolk Collegiate community and the Hampton Roads region. He looks forward to building upon the school’s strong foundation while partnering with students, families, faculty, staff, alumni and friends to shape the future of the Mighty Oaks.
