Big hearts, soft paws and a whole lot of cuddles

Norfolk Collegiate’s Upper School Art Club recently put compassion into action with a visit to Lil Roar Cat Rescue, where students delivered donated supplies along with a $500 contribution to support the organization’s ongoing work.

During their visit, students met with Mrs. Silva and Erin from the rescue, who provided a tour of the facility and shared insight into the organization’s mission, daily operations and the critical role it plays in the local community. Students also learned about meaningful ways to stay involved through future volunteer opportunities.

The visit was the culmination of a broader student-led initiative earlier this year. In partnership with the SPCA, the Art Club organized a schoolwide supply drive across the middle and upper schools. To build excitement and engagement, the drive was framed as a friendly “Cats vs. Dogs” competition, encouraging participation while supporting two deserving organizations.

Donations were split between Lil Roar Cat Rescue and Hope For Paws Rescue, with both groups benefiting from the generosity of the Collegiate community. In addition to supplies, the Art Club raised funds through creative efforts such as their Valentine’s Day “Love Bugs” sale and concession sales at basketball games.

Beyond the tangible impact, the experience reflects Norfolk Collegiate’s Upper School Portrait of an Oak—students who lead with empathy, take initiative and use their talents to serve others. And, of course, the day offered a memorable reward: plenty of time spent connecting with (and cuddling) their feline hosts.
