The Meaning Behind 54

Inspired by a lifelong friendship and a shared love of basketball, Norfolk Collegiate alumnus Adam Grant ’16 is honoring his late best friend, SaBastian “Bash” Townes ’16, by creating opportunities for the next generation.

When Adam Grant ’16 sees the number 54, he sees more than a basketball jersey. He sees his best friend.
SaBastian “Bash” Townes ’16 wore No. 54 on the basketball court at Norfolk Collegiate, where he and Adam, who wore No. 00, shared far more than a love of the game. They shared classrooms, teammates, friendships and dreams that would eventually take them both to Bryant University on basketball scholarships.

Their friendship began long before their high school years and continued well beyond graduation. Adam went on to play professional basketball overseas, while Bash pursued a different path, establishing his own trucking business.

When Bash unexpectedly passed away, Adam knew he wanted to find a way to honor his best friend. Not simply by remembering the life Bash lived, but by continuing the impact he had on others.

That vision became Legacy54, a new nonprofit founded by Adam in his hometown of Franklin, Virginia, with a mission to invest in young people through basketball, mentorship, education, leadership development and community support.

"The number 54, which was his jersey number, simply represents Bash," Adam shared. "His legacy is the heart of why the organization exists, and his number became our name."

More Than Basketball
For Adam and Bash, basketball was never just about what happened on the court. It was a pathway to experiences, relationships and opportunities that helped shape their futures.

"As a kid growing up in Franklin, I was fortunate to have opportunities that exposed me to people, places and environments outside of what I saw every day," Adam said. "Attending Norfolk Collegiate, going on to Bryant University and eventually playing basketball professionally opened my eyes to what access and exposure can do for a young person."

Today, he's working to create those kinds of opportunities for others.

"There is so much talent and potential in communities like Franklin, but the same level of resources aren’t always there. The potential is there but sometimes the access isn’t."
It's that gap Adam hopes Legacy54 can help bridge.

Basketball is a natural foundation for the organization, providing a familiar way to connect with young people, develop relationships and teach lessons that extend beyond the game. However, Adam's long-term vision is much broader.

Through mentorship, leadership development, athletic training, educational opportunities, scholarships and community initiatives, he hopes to build an organization that young people can grow with—one that encourages them to recognize their potential while connecting them with people and experiences that can help shape their futures.

Building Something That Lasts
Although Legacy54 is still in its early stages, its mission is already taking shape.

Legacy54 has already brought together local student-athletes, schools, coaches, families and supporters through a community basketball league and also partnered with others in the community to provide backpacks and school supplies to local schools.

For Adam, these early initiatives represent the beginning of something he hopes will continue to grow.

"I don’t want Legacy54 to simply be something created in his memory," he explained. "I want it to be something active and something that pours into young people, that creates opportunities and continues building a legacy through the lives of others."

The organization is also deeply personal to Bash's family. His mother serves on Legacy54's board, helping guide the nonprofit as it carries forward her son's name and legacy.

As Adam looks ahead, his plans include developing more structured mentorship opportunities, youth programming, athletic training, scholarships and educational initiatives, beginning with schools in his hometown.

But beyond any particular program, his vision is rooted in something simple: making sure young people know someone believes in them.

A Journey That Comes Full Circle
For Adam, Norfolk Collegiate remains an important part of the story.

He and Bash attended Collegiate throughout high school, graduating together in 2016 before continuing their basketball careers at Bryant University. Looking back a decade later, Adam has a deeper appreciation for the experiences and opportunities they shared.

"Collegiate is where we learned a lot about ourselves, and created memories with our classmates that’ll live on forever," he reflected. "It helped lead us into the next chapter of our lives at Bryant and gave us experiences and exposure that helped shape who we became."

Those experiences are now helping guide what Adam hopes to build through Legacy54.

"A place that played an important role in our journey now has an opportunity to be a part of what we’re building for the generation coming behind us," he said.

A Legacy Still Being Written
As basketball season gets underway, the sport that brought Adam and Bash so many opportunities remains at the center of Adam's work with young people.

Yet the goal has never been simply to develop better basketball players.

It's to help young people build confidence, discover new possibilities, develop meaningful relationships and understand that their circumstances don't have to define their futures.

"More than anything, I want young people from all backgrounds to know that they have people in their corner," Adam said.

"If someone can look back years from now and say Legacy54 helped them believe in themselves, introduced them to an opportunity, held them accountable or simply showed up for them when they needed it, then we’re accomplishing what I created this organization to do."

For Adam, Legacy54 is just beginning. What started as a way to honor his best friend is becoming an opportunity to share the lessons, relationships and experiences that helped shape both of their lives.
The number 54 will always represent Bash.

And through Legacy54, Adam hopes it will come to represent opportunity for generations to come.
