Upper School Students Honored in Recognition Ceremony

On Wednesday, June 2, 2021, members of Norfolk Collegiate's upper school gathered to honor the work of their classmates in a staggered Upper School Recognition Ceremony. Members of the Class of 2022 kicked off the ceremony by being honored for their achievements. When they were complete, juniors left the Hackney Theater and members of the Class of 2023 came in to be honored, followed by members of the Class of 2024. Below are the awards that were presented to each class (listed in class order):


Class of 2022 Award Presentations
Brandeis Book Award
  • Brandeis Book Award is given to a rising senior who demonstrates a commitment to civic engagement, community service, political activism, social justice, or volunteer work.

Harvard Book Award
  • Awarded to a rising senior who demonstrates excellence in scholarship and achievement in other non-academic areas.
  • Recipient: Sydney M. '22
Hollins University Creative Writing Book Award
  • Awarded to a sophomore or junior girl who, in the judgment of her teachers, has shown a serious interest in writing poems, fiction or creative nonfiction and has produced original work of good quality in one or more of these forms.

University of Virginia Jefferson Book Award
  • Recipient: Seth L. '22
Randolph College Book Award
  • Awarded to a junior who is academically strong and possesses leadership potential. The Randolph College Book Award automatically qualifies a recipient of the award for a scholarship of at least $5,000 if he or she applies to the College and is admitted.

Sweet Briar College Book Award
  • The Sweet Briar Alumnae Association Book Award is given to a 11th grade girl who is independently minded, community driven, intellectually curious, and fiercely determined to set and achieve goals.

William and Mary Leadership Award
  • The William and Mary Leadership Award is presented to the one student who best exemplifies the spirit of Norfolk Collegiate for inspirational leadership, outstanding scholarship, and unwavering loyalty to the high school and community.

Washington & Lee University Book Award
  • The Washington & Lee University Book Award is presented by the Tidewater Chapter of the Washington & Lee University Alumni Association to a student in his or her junior year who, in the minds of the faculty, exhibits the qualities most cherished and exemplified by George Washington, a generous benefactor to the University, and Robert E Lee, its president from 1865-1870.  These qualities are:  personal integrity and strength of character, academic excellence, and significant involvement in extracurricular activities.

Dr. John W. Baker Jr. Memorial Award   
  • This award is made to a junior who displays characteristics of genuine caring and concern for others; leadership abilities in many areas including athletics, music and extra-curricular activities; a quiet sense of humor; and strong academic achievement. Dr. Baker, a renowned local surgeon and professor at Eastern Virginia Medical School, was named Outstanding Teacher at EVMS in 1983. He is also remembered for his active support of and participation in community service. He was the father of three NCS students, Ann, Elizabeth and Will.

David Campbell Gayle Merit Scholarship
  • Awarded to one or more rising seniors at Collegiate who have demonstrated significant academic and athletic achievement. The recipient is highly motivated with an intellectual desire to achieve superior academic performance, well-rounded and participates in athletics and school activities and is a responsible citizen within the school and community.

  • This award is presented to a returning Norfolk Collegiate student who demonstrates Mrs. Keene’s love for learning and character as well as her concern and respect for others.

Brian Slattery McCann Memorial Scholarships
  • The award recognizes a returning Norfolk Collegiate student who exemplifies effort; is dedicated, hardworking, and gives 100%; one who also exhibits a quiet nature, good qualities and motivation.  It recognizes academic performance, participation in sports and school activities, and service to the school and community.

 Michael D. Tayloe Award             
  • The Michael D. Tayloe Award is presented to a returning sophomore or junior who has contributed to student life at Norfolk Collegiate; is an “all around” student having average to above average academic standing; is an athlete with a positive attitude; is a role model for other students; and is involved in service clubs.

  • This award is presented annually to recognize the contributions of the editors of the school’s newspaper, The Oak Leaf.

Townsend Oast Jr. Memorial Scholarship Award
  • Criteria for this award include outstanding service to school and community, positive attitude and school spirit, qualities that "T" possessed while a student here.

Juliana Tazewell Porter Memorial Award
  • This award is presented to a rising senior who is highly motivated with an intellectual and inquisitive desire to achieve superior academic performance, who motivates other students to master academic concepts, who is well-rounded and participates in athletics, the arts, music and/or school activities. The recipient demonstrates care and compassion for fellow students, is a responsible citizen with a commitment to school and community service, is respected by their peers and handles themselves with a great deal of poise.

Margaret Grigg Moore Memorial Award for Junior of the Year
  • The recipient is chosen by members of the junior class. The student exhibits the following strong characteristics throughout the school year: service, leadership, honor, and citizenship. The student honoree is selected for positive attitude and cooperative spirit and a result of having helped to create a “bond” throughout the class.
