Diversity and Inclusion Work in Independent Schools

Wednesday, November 6, 2019 7:00 PM - 8:00 PM

The Parent University event “Diversity and Inclusion Work in Independent Schools” is on Wednesday, Nov. 6, from 7-8 p.m. in the Hackney Theater. The program will be lead by the President and CEO of the Virginia Center for Inclusive Communities (VCIC) Jonathan Zur.

He will discuss:

  • Why diversity and inclusion work is important to think about and address in independent schools
  • Ways for schools and families to partner effectively around these issuesWays parents can support their children through these issues.
  • Ways for parents to talk with their children about diversity and inclusion

Middle and upper school students will work with Zur during the school day on Nov. 6 and 7 to expand their understanding of prejudice and stereotypes. Zur is delivering an assembly to students titled “Break the Cycle: Be the Change.”

Zur promises “a fast-paced, interactive experience that will explore the roots and consequences of prejudice. Using humor, role-playing, audience participation and real-life examples and stories, the program is designed to motivate students to work for change as upstanders and allies.”

If you don't have a child in the middle or upper school, you are still more than welcome to attend the parent event.
