Blake C. '29 Takes Top Honors in Middle School Spelling Bee

This year’s middle school spelling bee saw 34 students face off for the first-place honors, competing in 10 rounds and spelling 187 words. In the end, it was the word “urchins” that stumped all but Blake C. ’29, who took home the title of spelling bee champion.

Third place was awarded to Grace O. ’29 and second place went to William V. ’28.

Middle School English Teacher and coordinator of this year’s bee Chrisy Cooper said the event was fantastic. It was evident the students were looking forward to competing against their classmates.

“As we progressed through the spelling bee, it became evident that students spent a lot of time preparing and practicing their words,” said Cooper. “In the final rounds, Blake and William competed against each other in three nail-biting rounds before Blake was declared the champion. We also had an exciting spell-off for third place consisting of five additional rounds of spelling.”

Blake will now compete in The Virginia Media Spelling Bee hosted by WHRO on Saturday, Feb. 11. Good luck, Blake!
