Middle School Spelling Bee Goes 11 Rounds

This year’s middle school spelling bee saw 19 students face off for the first-place honor, competing in 11 rounds. Words such as invigorating, wattles, Juneteenth, granules and contraption came before contestants in the annual event. In the end, it was the word “contorted” that stumped all but David S. ’26, the reigning Spelling Bee champion.

Middle School English Teacher and coordinator of this year’s bee Chrisy Cooper said the event was great.

“Students spend a lot of time preparing for the spelling bee. The study list contains more than 400 words,” she said. “Students were really enthusiastic and supportive of each other.”

Third place was awarded to Robbie B. ’27 with second place going to Luke H. ’26 and David S. ’26 taking first place.

David, who also won in 2020, will go on to virtually compete in The Virginia Media Spelling Bee hosted by WHRO on Saturday, Feb. 19. He competed in the competition in 2020 where he finished fourth out of 60 competitors.
