‘Tis the season to give

On Dec. 1, Norfolk Collegiate will participate in #GivingTuesday, a global day of giving fueled by the power of social media and collaboration from a blend of nonprofits, civic organizations, businesses and schools, as well as families and individuals around the world.

#GivingTuesday is a day for everyone, everywhere to give and donate to a charitable cause of their choice. It supports giving and teaches philanthropy, which are two concepts that Collegiate aims to instill in our community.

#GivingTuesday’s goal is to support the giving season and combat days such as Black Friday and Cyber Monday by encouraging individuals to give to a great cause.

“We spend so much of the Thanksgiving holiday focused on Black Friday and Cyber Monday; #GivingTuesday is a great opportunity for us to show how much Norfolk Collegiate means during the holiday season,” said Cayte Brown ’08, alumni relations coordinator.

Collegiate is joining the movement with a schoolwide, social media driven giving initiative titled #NCSGives led by Brown, and Keisha Reynolds, communications specialist.

“Social media is one of our generation’s greatest tools,” said Reynolds. “We use it for our personal and professional lives to connect with people near and far. Now we have the chance to use it to join thousands of people and organizations around the world for a single day of kindness and charity.”

#NCSGives is an opportunity for our students, alumni, friends and families to support Collegiate while giving in honor or memory of those who gave so our students could succeed.

“#GivingTuesday allows our community to participate in a day of worldwide giving while supporting the school,” said Brown.

Students are encouraged to give in honor of their favorite teacher or coach. Faculty and staff are encouraged to give in honor of a student or a school initiative. Parents, alumni and friends can also join the movement by following the hashtag #NCSGives and telling us how they plan to give and donate online at norfolkcollegiate.org/givingtuesday on Dec. 1.

This national day of giving was created by 92nd Street Y, a cultural center located in New York City whose primary goal was to bring people together through service and giving.

All proceeds from #NCSGives will benefit the Norfolk Collegiate Annual Fund, which supports almost every aspect of a Norfolk Collegiate education. Donations will be recognized in the Annual Report and are 100 percent tax-deductible.
