Sailing team makes a splash in national competition

Norfolk Collegiate’s spring sailing club had a nail biter of a weekend May 24-26, 2019, at the 2019 National Invitation Team Race Regatta on Lake Erie in Cleveland.

The regatta was held at The Foundry in Cleveland where the team was in a three-way tie for first on Saturday night behind St. George’s School from Rhode Island. A lack of wind on Sunday caused the regatta to be abandoned, and with no change in the leader board, Norfolk Collegiate lost on a tie-break and finished as runners-up.

The team was coached by Randy Stokes and was comprised of students Ray Domena ’19, Parker Purrington ’19, Chris Robertson ’19, Matthew Wright ’19, Sam Beck ’21, Alex Schuck ’21, Adam Elci ’22, Harrison Thomson ’22 and Robert Chase ’22.

The sailors “displayed masterful skill and impressive teamwork and remarkable strength and endurance to succeed,” Stokes said. “The national championship races were sailed in high winds that challenged the best of teams. The competition they faced was fierce and talented. The hard practice work and teamwork spirit of the Norfolk Collegiate sailors carried them to the top in the national championship.”
