For eight years, alumnae Whitney Metzger Weireter ’03 and her Urban Playground nonprofit has been producing the Revenge of the Fifth Lightsaber Battle in Norfolk. Though the venue has varied, their enthusiasm has never waned.

Last year, Norfolk Collegiate hosted the event on the Granby campus turf fields. It was such a success, that the fun is returning this year!

So grab your lightsabers and bring the family as the Dark Side and Jedi’s face off on May 5 from 6-8 p.m.

“I can’t think of anyone who didn’t grow up watching Star Wars and an all-ages lightsaber battle has been a great way to bring people together,” Whitney told AltDaily in an interview. Whitney’s credits also include the infamous Survive Norfolk, a zombie tag game through Ghent.

The event starts at 6 p.m. with a meet-up and fun activities, such as coloring, lightsaber demos and a costume contest with the winners taking home bragging rights and some fun prizes.

Don't have a costume? Wear white to support the Jedis or black to fight for the Siths.

At 6:30 p.m., Collegiate’s band will play the Imperial March and the battle with commence. New this year is several battles, including all ages, adults-only and kids-only.

To participate, players must bring their own lightsabers. Store bought, plastic lightsabers and homemade foam sabers are fine, but metal, pipes, athletic sticks and others are not permitted.

All players are asked to also complete a waiver at the event. Please note that preschool-aged children are not allowed to participate in the battles, but they are encouraged to participate in the other activities.

This event is rain or shine, as the turf fields are playable when wet. However, if it is expected to storm at the time of the event, Urban Playground will post potential location changes or rain date on its Facebook page.

May the force be with you.
