2019 Middle School Spelling Bee Winners Crowned

It was with quiet intensity that 29 willing, middle school participants gathered Wednesday, Jan. 9, in the Hackney Theater for the Annual Middle School Spelling Bee.

It was a great success. Students took the event very seriously and spelled every word with vigor and enthusiasm.

First place went to Lila Rosen '23 (pictured right) who will go on to compete in televised The Virginian-Pilot Spelling Bee Competition on Saturday, Feb. 16!

Second place was awarded to Carmen Gaskin '25 and in third place to Ahmon Reddix '23.

Spellers went through 123 words over 13 rounds; Rosen’s winning word was “Juniper.”

“After being in the bee last year, I felt like I knew what to expect,” said Rosen. “I studied the spelling list pretty hard. Now I’m moving on to the state competition; the list is a lot harder than the one I studied for school. I’m mostly excited about going, but I’m a little nervous to be on TV.”

We're so proud of all our spellers!
