Oaks encouraged to support David Gayle Memorial Lacrosse game

On Sept. 19, the David C. Gayle Memorial Lacrosse Game will be held on Norfolk Collegiate’s new turf fields at 11:30 a.m.

Gayle, a 2009 graduate, passed away unexpectedly on Sept. 25, 2010, while a freshman at Virginia Tech.

His presence left an everlasting mark on the school’s lacrosse team due to his commitment to the sport, leadership and joyous spirit. The tournament and cookout was started by his friend Alexander Kopolov ’09 to raise funds for the David C. Gayle Memorial Scholarship, which is awarded to a rising senior who embodies Gayle’s attributes.

This year, Gayle’s sister, Laura Gayle ’16 and her classmate Tyler Smith ’16 will head the tournament as their senior project, an initiative started by Phillip Trapani ’15, Hunter Lee ’15, Daniel Blue ’15 and Trey Ritter.

“This event is very close to my heart, which is why I wanted to co-partner with Laura to host it,” said Tyler. “I think it is a great way to bring the community together to remember someone very important to us.”

“David was my brother and I have watched the fundraiser every year hoping one day I would be able to organize it,” said Laura. “Tyler has grown up with me for 10 years and knew David well, so we knew we wanted to work on this together.”

There is no cost to attend; however, T-shirts for the event are $20 and food will be sold at $10; spectators can make it a combo for $25.

If you would like to participate in the game there is a $5 fee per player.

"It is important to keep this tradition going to make sure people know who David was and to keep the scholarship fund available students,” said Laura.
