Back-to-school in a snap 

The new school is here and with that comes last-minute details and questions. Below is a breakdown of the basics, in hopes that getting ready for school is a little less stressful. Take a breath and relax, because this is going to be another fun start to the school year!

Below are links to everything that you may need to be prepared for the 2017-18 school year. To help you transition back to school, we've included some important dates and events from now until the end of September, by division. If you still have questions, please feel free to reach out to the lower, middle and upper school offices, as needed.

 

Back-to-School Prep

2017-18 Parent-Student Handbook

  • The Parent-Student Guide has important information for parents and students regarding the policies of Norfolk Collegiate. The guide provides an overview on everything from attendance and student conduct to school dress and homework expectations.

  • The Back-to-School Guide has important information for parents and students returning for the 2017-18 academic year. 

Photo Release, Field Trip and Authorize Pick-Up Form:

  • Please take a few minutes to complete the online form, which is required for each family to have on record for the 2017-18 school year.

Summer reading assignments:

  • Time is running out for those of you who haven’t cracked open the books on your summer reading list. Click here for links to the summer assignments.

Supplies:

  • Getting the school year started with the right supplies is a must. Please click here to see what supplies your student will need for this school year.

Textbooks:

  • Many middle and upper school students have an opportunity to use electronic books and apps along with or as a replacement for a traditional textbook. Click here for a listing of textbooks and apps for the middle and upper school.
  • In most cases, electronic books will be available through Adams K12 Student Direct. Also, the faculty has selected iPad apps for student iPads (see lists below). Students should have these apps installed on their iPads at the start of the school year.

BACK-TO-SCHOOL EVENTS

UPPER SCHOOL

Aug. 22: International Student Orientation

  • 11:30 a.m. | All international students are encouraged to attend the orientation which begins with lunch in the King Boardroom. Please contact John Bain, middle and upper school admissions associate, at jbain@norfolkcollegiate.org, or Ms. Nicole Weyer, dean of students, at nweyer@norfolkcollegiate.org for more information.

Aug. 22: Locker Set-Up

  • 3:30-5:30 p.m. | Students are invited to set-up their lockers. 

Aug. 23: Locker Set-Up

  • 10 a.m.-2 p.m. | Students are invited to set-up their lockers. 

Aug. 23: Freshmen Class & New Student Orientation

  • This is for all freshmen (new and returning) and students new to the upper school. Returning sophomores, juniors and seniors are not required to attend.
  • 10 a.m.-12:15 p.m. | Student orientation begins in the Hackney Theater. Students may arrive in comfortable, appropriate clothing and don't need to be in dress code.
  • 10 a.m. | Parent orientation is for ALL freshmen parents and parents with students new to Norfolk Collegiate in the Hackney Theater. This program should run about 45 minutes. At the conclusion, members of our athletic office, business office, etc. will be available for questions. If you have questions, please contact Ms. Nicole Weyer, dean of students, at nweyer@norfolkcollegiate.org.

Aug. 24: First day of classes

  • The first morning bell will ring at 8:15 a.m. and students should be in advisory by 8:18 a.m. The middle and upper school day ends at 3:10 p.m.

Aug. 30: Middle and upper school fall athletic orientation

  • 7 p.m. | All student-athletes and their parents are encouraged to attend. The program will provide an overview of our school’s athletic philosophy and information on the athletic program. It will take place in the Hackney Theater.

Sept. 4: School Closed for Labor Day

Sept. 6: Senior Night

  • 7 p.m. | Hosted by the College Counseling Office, this program is for all seniors and their parents in the Hackney Theater.

Sept. 7: Middle and Upper School Parents Night

  • 7 p.m.| This program is for all middle and upper school parents and will begin in the Watt-Baker Gymnasium. This is a wonderful opportunity for parents to get a glimpse into their children’s school day, visit their classroom and speak with their teachers.

Sept. 8: Sophomore Trek

  • Sophomores will depart from the school for YMCA Camp Arrowhead in Suffolk for a day of class bonding, leadership and teambuilding activities. Students will meet at 7:45 a.m. for an 8 a.m. departure and return to campus around 6 p.m.

Sept. 12: Volunteer Information Breakfast

  • 8:30 a.m. | Parents and grandparents are encouraged to join us for breakfast and learn about the ways in which they can be involved in our community. Topics include event planning committees, school store, athletic concessions, lower school library and more. Please RSVP to jstump@norfolkcollegiate.org by Friday, Sept. 8.  

Sept. 14-15: Freshmen Retreat

  • Freshmen will depart from the school on Sept. 14 for YMCA Camp Silver Beach on the Eastern Shore for an overnight adventure complete with class bonding, leadership and teambuilding activities. Students need to be to school by 8 a.m. and will depart at 8:15 a.m. They'll return to campus around 4 p.m. on Sept 15.

Sept. 20: School Picture Day

  • Student should be in school dress. Boys need to be in a coat and tie.

Sept. 21: School Closed for Rosh Hashanah

Sept. 27: Fall Athletic Pictures

  • 3:15-5:30 p.m. | Fall athletic photos will be taken in the middle school gymnasium.

 

MIDDLE SCHOOL  

Aug. 22: Locker Set-Up

  • 3:30-5:30 p.m. | All middle school students can attend this event, during which they will be issued locks. 

Aug. 23: Sixth-Grade Orientation 

  • 10 a.m.-2:30 p.m. | Sixth-grade orientation begins in the middle school. All sixth-grade students are encouraged to attend and may arrive in comfortable, appropriate clothing (they don't need to be in dress code). Students need to bring their iPads, as they'll be setting them up during orientation. The event will end at 2:30 p.m.
  • 1:45-2:30 p.m. | Students who were unable to attend the locker set-up social the previous day will be issued lockers and locks. This is a great time to set up lockers and meet your classmates.

Aug 23: Sixth-Grade Parent & New Seventh- and Eighth-Grade Student & Parent Orientation

  • 1-1:45 p.m. | New parents and new seventh- and eighth-grade students will learn about the middle school opportunities, dress code, advisory and more in the Hackney Theater. This will be followed by a social for parents and students from 1:45-2:30 p.m.

Aug. 24: First day of classes

  • The first morning bell will ring at 8:15 a.m. and students should be in advisory by 8:18 a.m. The middle and upper school day ends at 3:10 p.m.

Aug. 25: Trip to the Virginia Zoo

  • 12:30-3 p.m. | Sixth-grade students and their advisers will be taking a field trip to the Virginia Zoo. They'll leave at 12:30 and return in time for 3:10 dismissal.

Aug. 28: Fall middle school athletics begin 

  • Please see our website for times and locations.

Aug. 29: Eighth-Grade Retreat at Triple-R-Ranch

  • 8:40 a.m.-2:50 p.m. | Students will depart from school at 8:40 a.m. and return at 2:50 p.m. for a fun day of bonding and leadership opportunities.

  • 8:15 a.m. | Middle school parents are invited to join counselor Casey White '11 and Head of Middle School Sue Bryant as they discuss Transitioning to Middle School: Advice for Both Parents and Students in the Explore Room.

  • Student should be in school dress. Boys need to be in a coat and tie.

Sept. 21: School Closed for Rosh Hashanah 

Sept. 22: Middle School Hangout Night

  • 7-9 p.m. | Middle school students are encouraged to attend this evening event which features a DJ, dancing and lots of fun!

Sept. 27: Fall athletic pictures

  • 3:15-5:30 p.m. | Fall athletic photos will be taken in the middle school gymnasium.

 

LOWER SCHOOL

Aug. 21-24: EPI Pre-Packed School Supplies

  • The families who ordered the pre-packaged school supplies from EPI can pick up their packs at the lower school daily from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. For more information, please contact Emily Wilson at ewilson@norfolkcollegiate.org.

Aug 22: Grades K-5 New Family Meet & Greet

  • 5:30-7 p.m. | New families in kindergarten through grade 5 are invited to a Meet & Greet cookout and informational session. Please RSVP to Jodi Dobrinsky at jdobrinsky@norfolkcollegiate.org.

Aug. 23: Pre-K-5 NEW Student Orientation

  • 8:30-9:30 a.m. | This is a wonderful opportunity for our NEW students and their parents to become more acquainted with Collegiate. Please join us for this informative time together and don’t forget to bring your school supplies.

Pre-Kindergarten Play Date

  • 9:30-10 a.m. | This is a great opportunity to get to know your pre-kindergarten classmates at the lower school. Please RSVP to Alex Snyder at 625.0471, ext. 1644 or asnyder@norfolkcollegiate.org.

Open House for returning students

  • 10 a.m.-Noon | All returning students and parents are requested to join us at our Open House. This is a great time for your child to settle into his or her new learning environments and unpack supplies.

Aug. 24: First day of classes

Celebrate & Commiserate Welcome Back Parents Coffee

  • 8:30-9 a.m. | Join us in the Spainhour Family Library as we celebrate and commiserate the first day of school with a cup of coffee and a pastry. 

Aug. 26: Pancakes & Pajamas

  • 9-10 a.m. | Put on your favorite pajamas and enjoy pancakes with your family and classmates at the lower school at 9 a.m.Please RSVP to Emily Wilson at ewilson@norfolkcollegiate.org.

Aug. 31: Lower School Parents Night

  • 7 p.m. | This is a wonderful opportunity for parents to get a glimpse into their children’s school day. Since this is an evening event scheduled on a school night, we ask that you arrange for a babysitter so bedtime routines remain undisturbed. We hope to see you there!

  • Aug. 22 & 23: The Collegiate Corner will be open from 8 a.m.-6 p.m. for your convenience. Stop by and get your Collegiate gear, including physical education clothes, school supplies, spirit gear and more!
