A step in the right direction with college experts

On Wednesday, Jan. 27, Collegiate will host Junior Night for the Class of 2017 in the Hackney Theater at 7 p.m.

Junior Night is designed to provide students and their families insight into the admission process and the current landscape of what they will face while preparing for the college application process.

Students will have the opportunity to speak with experts such as Gregory Roberts and James Pennix who are the dean of admissions from the University of Virginia and Radford University.

“It’s our goal to provide students with tips and strategies for exploring colleges and universities,” said Michael Kaplan, director of college counseling. “We encourage students to take charge by guiding the process while parents should play a supportive role.”

One of the key components Kaplan believes is that there is a college for everyone that is the right fit. He encourages students to find the place that is right for them and to disregard the stereotypes and rumors that may be circling throughout the community.

“I want everyone to feel empowered and to be excited about the process and not to stress,” he said. “The best way is for parents and students to continue the conversation and to develop a plan that works for them.”

Juniors are encouraged to schedule an appointment with Kaplan to start the discussions on the college process by contacting Margaret Paul at 757.480.2885 or mpaul@norfolkcollegiate.org.
