Students set to compete in FIRST LEGO League regional tournament

Middle school students Donavan Baker ’26, Luke Hahne ’26, Jake Householder ’26, Parker Howlett ’25, Austin Hrisko ’25, Natalie Kraus ’26 and Bethuel Terefe ’27 have been hard at work afterschool and during weekends practicing in preparation for tomorrow’s regional FIRST LEGO League tournament.
This year’s FIRST LEGO League challenge is to find ways to get more people active and playing. They surveyed several local parks to evaluate their inclusiveness and determined that not all are inclusive to all age groups and abilities. So, they are working on ways to make playgrounds more accessible to people with disabilities, with strollers, for grandparents and more. They’ve even spoken to members from the City of Norfolk to pitch their ideas on how to get more people to the park and playing!

The tournament will be virtual, meaning teams were required to submit videos of their project and then will meet with the judges tomorrow via Zoom to answer questions. If they place, they will advance to the state tournament in February.
