Carson McMonagle is a name you want to know as she is leading the way for our varsity girls’ tennis team. Carson has played tennis since the sixth grade and considers the Collegiate team her second family. Recently, she experienced her most memorable sports moment by defeating Nansemond-Suffolk with a tiebreaker, which led our Oaks to win the match. It’s no wonder why Carson is October’s Athlete of the Month. She sat down with the Oak Connection to talk about her recent victory, team and goals for the season.

What is it like to be named the Athlete of the Month?

I am so excited and honored to be named Athlete of the Month; what a great privilege. The varsity girls’ tennis team is such a great group, I feel like any one us of could have been picked. We all root for each other and work so great together as a team.

How did you become involved in tennis?

I took a few tennis lessons when I was growing up, but it was not until sixth grade after joining the Norfolk Collegiate team that I became more interested in tennis. Collegiate’s tennis team has become like a second family to me.

What are your goals for the season?

Our team’s goal is to make it to the state tournament; we just missed qualifying last year. My personal goals would be to learn and grow as a player. It wouldn’t be bad to win all of my singles matches either.

What lessons have you learned throughout prior years that will impact you in your varsity career?

Even though we are all playing tennis as individuals, tennis is definitely a team sport. It’s always important to encourage my other teammates while they’re playing.

What’s your most memorable sports moment while at Collegiate?

My most memorable Collegiate sports moment happened just a few weeks ago. I was the final person playing, and my match came down to a tiebreaker. The whole team was cheering as loud as they could, and I ended up winning the tiebreaker 10-8, which allowed us to win the whole match against Nansemond-Suffolk.

Do you play any other sports? If so, which?

I’m also on the Norfolk Collegiate varsity swim team.

Aside from tennis and school, what are your favorite things to do?

I particularly enjoy baking and hanging out with my friends and family.
