College Counseling

Michael (Mike) Kaplan joins Norfolk Collegiate college counseling department as director of college counseling.  It is not easy following in the steps of his predecessor, but he looks forward to building upon the program that Betty Jones created over a 30-year career.  Mike joins us after holding the college counselor position at Cape Henry Collegiate School.  Prior to that, he worked at colleges and universities for nine years, most notably serving as an assistant dean of admissions at The College of William & Mary.

Mike knows firsthand that college admissions is more of an art than a science.  "Over the years, I've seen the full spectrum of high school students - those whose test scores matched our profiles and those who, in addition to having demonstrated success in the classroom, bring a wealth of individual talents and interests that enrich the campus community.  Now on the other side of the desk, I am looking forward to working with students and their families to not only find colleges and universities that match their academic aspirations, but schools that afford the opportunities to grow into global citizens."

A native of Connecticut, Mike  earned his B.A. from Colby College in Waterville, Maine.  He earned an M.P.A. from Virginia Commonwealth University and is currently in the latter stages of earning a doctorate in higher education administration at The College of William & Mary.  Mike can be reached at mkaplan@norfolkcollegiate.org.

The Norfolk Collegiate School College Counseling Office maintains an open door policy. Students are encouraged to stop by and speak with the college counseling staff about all facets of the application process.
