Welcome to the Upper School
Jason Mundy

Norfolk Collegiate School is a strong, healthy school community that values and celebrates the endeavors of each individual member. It is a school that feels like home to students and graduates alike, rooted with deep traditions, lasting friendships, and opportunities for leadership in a wide variety of classes, clubs, and activities. The artists, musicians, scholars, athletes and writers that make up our student body are young men and women of character.

In the upper school, our goal is to build on the solid foundation of hard work and academic success found in the middle school. We strive to expose our students to a wide variety of advanced placement courses, independent study programs and challenging electives in order to create a community of learners willing to take academic risks.

Norfolk Collegiate School is a busy place, with teachers and students working hard and earning successes in a variety of different activities. On any given day in the upper school, you might pass the AP Psychology class as they get ready for a field trip to visit the FBI Crime Lab in Quantico, or see chemistry students off to Jefferson Labs, or the entire tenth grade en route to a performance of "The Man of LaMancha."

In class, Mrs. Bakeman's Spanish IV class might be listening to Cuban folk music as part of their study of revolutionary movements, while Mr. White's Latin class translates Virgil. Mrs. Hedgecock's history students could be squaring off against one another in a foreign policy simulation as Mr. Hurst introduces his film class to the antics of Charlie Chaplin. As you navigate the hallways, you can not help but notice the wonderful charcoal drawings of Ms. Woodruffs drawing class. In AP Physics, you might be lucky enough to overhear Mr. Davis explaining how to calculate the energy needed to propel a rocket from the earth into outer space.

Norfolk Collegiate students enjoy the academic challenge and breadth of the upper school program while also honing the skills that will prepare them for college and beyond through hands-on field study trips, the exploration of the arts and community service.

Sincerely,
