On the morning of Saturday Feb 11, local artists will be using NCS art studios to create bowls for the annual Empty Bowls charity function to be held in March. “Last year students made and donated bowls using our recycled clay. They were engaged in learning techniques in class while also helping our community,” said Cathy Wright, upper school art teacher. “This year we are stepping it up a notch by having students also observe pottery techniques from professional artists during this onsite Bowl Roll.” Forty student bowls were donated last year; this year their goal is to donate fifty bowls to the cause.
Typically 200-230 bowls are made during an event like this, making headway towards the 1,000 goal. These bowls will be sold during the Empty Bowl Dinner held on March 16th at Virginia Wesleyan's Boyd Dining Hall from 5:30 - 8:30 PM . Tickets are $20 in advance or $25 at the door. Evening festivities also include artisan demonstrations and silent auction. Proceeds are used to feed the hungry in Tidewater. Last year’s Empty Bowls Diner earned more than $20,000.
