Three weeks ago, Ms. Shannon Parker’s senior homeroom challenged upper school students to participate in a food drive. Their goal was to collect enough food to feed a family of four for a year. The seniors calculated that each homeroom would need to collect a number of items including 6 boxes of cereal, 16 cans of soup, 6 boxes of pasta and rice, 10 cans of vegetables, 14 boxes of prepared meals, 6 cans of beans, and 8 containers of pasta sauce. When explaining the challenge to her classmates, senior Meghan Holley reminded the assembled group that no one would get community service hours for this effort. There are some things, she said, that are worth doing even if you don’t get any tangible reward for it. Scott Kennedy encouraged the administrative staff to take on their own list to work toward the effort.
On Thursday, December 15th, the Norfolk Collegiate community donated 1,381 pounds of food to the Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia just in time to help Hampton Roads families at the start of the holiday season. Upper school math and science teacher, Blair Swoope, thanked Ms. Parker for her leadership and hopes that by the great success of this effort, students “will know what a positive difference they can make at Norfolk Collegiate and in our larger community.”
