Middle School Students honored by Optimist Club

Blair Hurley and Victor Layne were honored today by the Wards Corner Optimist Club at their annual Middle School Youth Appreciation Lunch.  The event honors two students each from Norfolk Christian Middle School, Norfolk Collegiate Middle School, Norview Middle School, and Northside Middle School. This year’s guest speaker was Rabbi Michael Panitz from Temple Israel.

Blair and Victor were selected by the eighth grade faculty. In addition to basing their decision on who best represents the Optimist Creed, they look at academics, extra-curricular activities, leadership, and athletic participation.

Blair has achieved High Honors since coming to NCS in seventh grade and is a member of the National Junior Honor Society. She participates in the Student Government Association and chorus. This year she played Varsity Field Hockey and is currently playing JV Basketball. Blair is a member of Serenity Circle, a CHKD junior circle, and has worked with special needs students in the Norfolk Public Schools. She is also a member of EDGE at Blessed Sacrament.

Victor Layne, a member of the National Junior Honor Society, has achieved High Honors throughout his middle school career. He has been elected by his peers to Honor Council in grades 6, 7, and 8. He has sailed and crewed for NCS. This year, as a varsity sailor, he qualified in M.A.S.S.A. Fleet Racing and Team Racing. He is a member of both the band and strings.  Victor’s community activities include being a member of the Bay Youth Orchestra of Virginia since 2009. He is a member of Blessed Sacrament and its youth group, EDGE. In sixth grade he attended the National Young Scholars Program and in seventh grade the National Young Leaders State Conference.
