The Oaks took to the mats Friday at VCU's Siegel Center and returned late Saturday night with one title, 6 place winners and a VISAA team 6th place! The Oaks also finished second to TCIS Champion Cape Henry in the Mid-Sized School Division.
Results by weight class:
103: Second seeded and undefeated Tony Protogyrou won his first VISAA State title after two previous visits to the medal podium with four solid victories. After a first round bye, he pinned Lascara of Bishop Sullivan, pinned 7th seed Aveson of Richmond in 1:24, before defeating #3 seed and always tough Dustin Runzo of Norfolk Academy by a 1-0 score. The championship match with #1 seed Elliot Mondragon of Bishop Ireton had Tony scoring quickly and often in a match that was not as close as the final 10-6 score. The victory also avenged a loss by pin to Mondragon in last year’s 3rd place match. Congrats Tony on winning the State Title while improving to 47-0, becoming the 8th State Champion in Norfolk Collegiate history!
125: #5 seed Boyd Melchor opened with a bye before winning by fall in 1:17 over Jackson of Seton. After dropping his quarterfinal to Whitaker of PVI, Boyd rebounded with pins over McDaniel of BSC and Sharps of RC. Boyd then lost a tight 3-1 match to #3 seed Pitts of STC. Melchor rebounded quickly by pinning DiGuillian of BOC in 2:18 for fifth place. Boyd also finished second in the tournament behind Taylor Whitt of NA with four pins in the least time. The junior state 5th placer received the bid late last night from VISAA Wrestling President Steve Castle of Episcopal High School. Melchor currently has a 40-8 record on the year. This will be his first trip to the National Preps at Lehigh University.
145: Senior#3 seed captain Chris Adsit battled the flu all week, then came the battle with the scales, and a bye before finally getting back on the mat with a second round 16-1 tech fall over Varhegyl of Covenant. Chris won by fall in the quarterfinals over #6 Norris of BOC, before being pinned in the semi's by NA's Ben Alberico. The Naval Academy bound Adsit then pinned #5 seed Herzog of EPIS, punching his ticket to Nationals before winning third place with a decisive 7-3 decision over Kyle Pate of Richmond Collegiate.
160: Senior captain and #6 seed Jamie Crabbs had a bye and then scored a fall over #11 Fofanah of Hargrave. In the quarters our "pit bull" fell behind 5-0 to #3 seed Swenson of SSSA before rolling the Saint to his back for the fall in in 3:01. Jamie dropped a hard fought 8-3 match to #2 seed Trey Tarr of STC before securing his trip to the Nationals at Lehigh with a fall over long time nemesis and #5 seed Anthony Olmo of BSC.
The Oaks Tony Protogyrou, Chris Adsit, Jamie Crabbs, and Boyd Melchor return to practice Monday to prepare for the National Prep Wrestling Tournament hosted annually by Lehigh University in Bethlehem Pennsylvania.
