Members of Norfolk Collegiate Middle School’s Heath Chapter of the National Junior Honor Society stuffed bears for patients at the Children’s Hospital of the Kings Daughter and created Valentines Cards for St. Mary's Home for Disabled Children Jan 24. “NJHS promotes scholarship, leadership, service and character and these charitable opportunities are a great way for students to gain experience which will prepare them for the National Junior Honor Society in the upper school,” said Claire Fornsel, group advisor and middle school science teacher.
At Norfolk Collegiate School, community service activities and volunteerism are valued, and students are encouraged to participate in activities that benefit others. Demetra Protogyrou, 8th grade NJHS member and her mother Kathy Protogyrou invited NJHS to help with this project. “I have volunteered with CHKD for the past seven years. I am excited about the relationship NCS is establishing with CHKD and the lessons students receive from service activities,” said Mrs. Protogyrou.
The National Junior Honor Society is the nation's premier organization established to recognize outstanding middle school students. More than just an honor roll, NJHS serves to honor those students who have demonstrated excellence in the areas of scholarship, leadership, service and character. These characteristics have been associated with membership in the organization since its beginnings in 1921 and 1929. Norfolk Collegiate School students in the seventh and eighth grades who meet the academic and service requirements may be eligible for membership in the National Junior Honor Society.
“Citizen scholarship is a foundational element of the K-12 program at Norfolk Collegiate. Our program offerings develop graduates with a sense of compassion that motivates them to both participate and lead in their local communities,” said Head of the Middle School Roz Klein.
