Students in the Norfolk Collegiate Upper School further build upon their education through participation in band, chorus, strings and drama. As students explore the performing arts, we help them grow into individuals ready to face the challenges of our ever-changing world.
Norfolk Collegiate School offers the following classes for students interested in the performing arts:
Chorale meets daily, within the regular school schedule, performing at all major functions and occasional competition trips. Sight-singing and theory are included.
Upper School Strings Ensemble meets twice a week before school and includes violin, viola, cello and bass. Students learn various music styles from Bach to the Beatles while polishing their ensemble skills and performance techniques. The class includes required performances in school and in the community throughout the year.
Drama familiarizes students with basic acting fundamentals, set design and construction, and an overview of drama history. Grading is based upon projects including scene study, character building and play production. This class supports the entire drama program and assists in preparation for all theater productions.
Women's Chorus, which meets before school, performs at major functions for Norfolk Collegiate School and is included in all competition trips.
Upper School Band meets before school and uses traditional band instruments. Students learn performance style, complex rhythms, and other advanced performance techniques. The Upper School Band performs at least three public concerts each year.
Jazz Band explores current and classic jazz band literature. Jazz Band performs at numerous events in and out of school each year and hosts The Blue Note jazz café. Jazz Band is offered only when enough qualified students enroll with an acceptable instrument.
