| back | | Battle of the Brains | | | In a match to be aired April 9, Norfolk Collegiate's Battle of the Brains team defeated Highland Springs 310-130 in round two of the state wide competition. Despite the absence of Anderson Granger and Taylor Lain, Captain Tommy Miro, Mark Jamias, Sara Weintraub, and Robert Abramov overwhelmed their opponents. According to Richard White, team coach and NCS Latin teacher, “The match, while it lacked the drama of the two previous matches, was an impressive display of speed and accuracy by both teams.” The Oaks had previously defeated Louisa County in a play-in round before beating Hermitage in the first round.
Created in 1975, the Battle of the Brains competition was expanded to schools throughout Central Virginia in 1978. A written test was initiated as a prerequisite for tournament qualification in 1991. For several years the show aired on public television. Now it can be seen on CBS 6 (Central Virginia) on Saturdays at 10:00am.
In the next match the Oaks will face either Henrico or Trinity Episcopal.
Good Luck!
