Athletics at Norfolk Collegiate School

At Norfolk Collegiate School, we believe a well-rounded school experience includes a healthy emphasis on team sports and fitness. Our athletic programs offer ample activities to cover the interests and capabilities of all students.

Students participate in athletics and learn the importance of teamwork and cooperation. Beginning in the lower school, students participate in physical education and intramurals, with a focus on teaching fitness and nutrition.

Athletics, especially for students in grades 6 through 12, have always been an important component of the educational experience at Norfolk Collegiate School. Our spring magazine revealed the variety of team and individual sports available to student athletes, all focusing on healthy competition that develops life skills like teamwork, accountability, goal setting and effective communication – skills that will serve our students well not just on the field of play, but in the classroom, in their social environment and in the workplace.
Last year, Bob Czekaj joined the staff of Norfolk Collegiate as athletic director, and one of his first initiatives was a performance conditioning program that has been integrated into all sports offerings. Contracting with specialists to kick-start the program and provide ongoing clinics during team practices, all NCS athletes now receive exercise prescription plans to help them improve performance in competition, as well as injury prevention. “We will continue to increase our investment in this program that has a direct benefit on each athlete,” said Czekaj.

Performance training isn’t the only addition to the program. This year we open a new weight room facility - another investment in athletic training. The room will be outfitted with strength and conditioning machines, industry-leading weight training systems and state-of-the-art flooring. The larger facility not only raises the quality of our athletic training but also increases convenience and access for teams and coaches. In fact, teams are already using some of our new equipment. Over the summer, the boys’ basketball team has been training on our Vertimax trainer - a jumping trainer which improves on explosiveness and speed.

Our strategic plan includes taking a comprehensive look at our master campus plan, which includes all athletic facilities, to ensure that our students are well served. To make the most of our outdoor facilities, we are pleased to have partnered with the Loudermilk Group, a nationally
recognized athletic facility planner, whose clients include the University of Michigan, the University of Miami, the Dallas Mavericks – and closer to home, Old Dominion University’s new Foreman Field and the Ted Constant Center. We are fortunate to be among the very few secondary
schools to secure the Loudermilk Group’s services and thank alum Wood Selig ’79, NCS parent and new board member, athletic director of Old Dominion University, for making the introduction. We look forward to sharing these plans as they develop.

We believe that athletics plays a valuable role in developing well-rounded students. We encourage you to come out to support our athletes by attending games throughout the year. It is one of the many ways to meet other parents and families that make up the Norfolk Collegiate community.
